Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is the third most practiced cosmetic procedure
in this world which is carried out for removing the sagging skin around the eye
and for removing the lines and wrinkles around the eye. Before deciding to
carry out blepharoplasty your surgeon will have a detailed discussion with you
for ascertaining the details about your eye sight, how tear is produced in your
eyes, whether you are using any contact lenses etc. He will also ask about the
medications that you are taking now and give suitable advice regarding the
continuance or stoppage of the existing medications.
The surgical procedure: This procedure is generally done
under general anesthesia. The incisions for this surgery are made in the crease
of the eyelids so that the scars left out remains undetectable. Incision for
lower eyelid surgery is made in the lash line if excess skin is to be removed.
With great care and precision, the surgeon removes a small sliver of excess
skin. Removing excess skin may cause problems in closing the eye and removing
of lesser skin will result in an unaesthetic appearance. Excess fat in the
eyelids causing eyelid puffiness is removed carefully. In transconjunctival
blepharoplasty the incision in the lower eyelid is made inside the eyelid so
that the scar is not visible outside. Dissolvable sutures are used for closing
the incisions. Tiny sterile bandages and special ointments are applied for
faster healing. For the first few days after the surgery you are expected to
keep your head upright and avoid straining activities. For about 7 days your
eyes may feel sticky and itchy. Your vision can be blurry for a week or so and
during this time you are not expected to wear contact lenses. Usually this
procedure is not accompanied by any complications. But bleeding, numbness,
swelling, skin discoloration etc are the common difficulties that may accompany
blepharoplasty.
Ptosis surgery
Drop of upper eyelids is known as ptosis. Eyelid drop can be very
small and barely noticeable or can be extensive covering the entire pupil.
Ptosis is generally seen in aged people. But this can rarely be seen in
children also. Depending upon the severity of the dropping of eyelid, ptosis
may lead to difficulty in seeing. Ptosis
may be present in an individual as a congenital defect or may be developed as a
consequence of ageing or as a side effect of a cataract surgery or an injury.
This can also be caused as a result of levators which is a problem of the
muscles in lifting the eyelids. Blepharoplasty is another name for this
surgery.
The problem of drop of eyelids can be solved by a conducting
a surgical procedure in which the levator muscles are tightened by the surgeon
and in severe cases the levator muscles are attachéd to the eyebrow by which
the forehead muscles are substituted for levator muscles. After the surgery the
position of the eyelids improves but their symmetry may be lost. In rare cases
the movement of the eyelids will also be lost.
Children born with congenital ptosis require surgical
correction. Otherwise it may result in amblyopia which is a disease
characterized by reduced vision.
