Abhayanga is an Ayurvedic
treatment process in which large amounts of warm oil are applied on body and
the entire body is massaged with human hands. The oil used is pre medicated
with certain herbs as per the requirement of each case. Ahyanga can be done as part of Pancha arama. It is
usually done in the first stage of Panchakarma known as Purva Karma(pre-treatment). It is also done
as its own therapy.
Abhyanga is followed by svedana
therapy which is nothing but warm bath or lying out in open sun. Abhyanga can
be performed by a single person or can be performed by more than one massage
therapist simultaneously.
Abhyanga forms part of the daily
routine of ayurvedic healing system benefits of which is eloquently described
in traditional ayurvedic texts. One such text says that giving a full-body
massage using oil regularly n, relives fatigue, pacifies doshas, enhances the
luster of your skin and provides perfect sleep, pleasure and stamina. The
answer to the seeming contradiction of a
ritual becoming blissfully relaxing, and gearing up to peak performance lies in the fact that this
process relieves the accumulated toxins and stress form mind and body and acts
as a powerful regenerator and charger for the mind and body.
Some of the benefits arising out
of following this ritual on a daily basis are detailed below.
·
Increased blood circulation
·
Muscles and all the physical body parts are
toned up
·
Nerves are calmed
·
Joints are lubricated
·
Mind becomes more alert
·
More
stamina
·
Sound
sleep at night
·
Impurities
from human body are thrown out
·
Skin
becomes smoother and softer
·
Abhyanga is normally done in the morning before the daily bath
so that the toxins accumulated in your body during the previous night are
released. Cured sesame oil, herbalized massage oil, aroma massage oil etc are
usually used for abhyanga.
Transdermal absorption of the qualities of the material used
helps the skin to perform its diverse functions in the most effective manner.
It allows skin the largest organ in the body to release toxins and absorb
nourishments. The process is similar to the oiling of a car. If you oil the car
regularly in the proper manner it will remain in peak condition without any
problem and will give you trouble free performance.
If you are using sesame
oil go for cold-pressed oil which will be chemical-free. Sesame oil has
antioxidant properties and this helps the skin to remain safe from radical
damage. You will have to cure the oil for best results. For curing heat the
sesame oil to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. After reaching the above temperature let
the oil cool. Now you can store this oil and use whenever needed.
