Lip augmentation Procedures

Artecole: Artecole is soft tissue filler which is injected into the lips to plump up and give an energetic appearance. But as this is a synthetic material there is a possibility of allergic reactions. But this is long lasting than natural fillers like autologen.

Autologen: Collagen taken from another part of your body is injected into the lips to fill it and give a fleshy appearance. As this is a natural material taken from the patient’s own body  there is no possibility of an allergic reaction. But it has been found that the effect of this type of filling material is short lived.

Collagen: Collagen extracted from cows is injected to the lips. As this is a foreign material the possibility of allergic reactions are present in this case also.

Dermalogen: In this case the collagen from diseased persons are extracted and used to inject in the lips of the required persons. This is temporary arrangement and the possibility of your body rejecting it cannot be ruled out.

Fascia: In this procedure a specific type of tissues are extracted from the patient’s body or from the body of donor and it is injected or surgically implanted. Within one year the body will absorb this fascia. Delay in results is the main drawback of this method.

Fat: Fat from the patient’s abdomen or thighs are injected or implanted in the lips. This is a method with no risks. Improving your weight after the procedure will help to improve the effectiveness of this method as fat cells may get bigger.

Surgical procedure

Lip augmentation is a surgical procedure which is generally carried out under local anesthesia. The procedure usually takes only two hours. Depending upon the extent and complexity of the targets to be achieved your surgeon will select one of the procedures detailed below.

Alloderm: Tiny incisions are made on the inside part of the lips and a sheet of collagen made from the collagen extracted from the deceased human is inserted into the lips. This gives the lips a filled up appearance.  The important drawback of this method is that it is not long lasting. Normally it becomes ineffective after one year.

Fat grafting: In this method the fat removed from your own body is injected into the lips to give an appearance of fullness.  As the fat of your own body is used in this case there is a possibility of re-absorption.

Hylaform: Hyalurnic acid obtained from body is used to make hylaform which has been found to be very effective in giving a filled op appearance to the lips. The drawback with this method is that repeated treatment will be necessary as the benefits of this method are temporary.

Goertex, SoftForm etc: These are synthetic materials that produces permanent results. As these are synthetic materials there is no possibility of body absorbing them, but the possibility of allergic reactions cannot be ruled out.

Local flap grafts: In this procedure skin and tissue from your mouth itself is taken and grafted to the lips. This is a less invasive procedure in which incisions are made along the upper line of your lip. This procedure will be selected by cosmetic surgeons only as their last resort.

Lip augmentation is a simple procedure in which you can go home on the same day if you have someone with you who can drive the car. If it is accompanied by implant or graft the recovery time may extent to two or three weeks.
